If black mould keeps reappearing in the same spots — around the windows, in the corners of a bedroom, behind the wardrobe — you're not doing anything wrong by cleaning it. The problem is that cleaning only removes what you can see. The conditions that grew it are still there.
Mould is a symptom, not the problem
Black mould grows wherever warm, moist air meets a cold surface and there isn't enough ventilation to carry the moisture away. Modern life makes plenty of moisture — showers, cooking, drying washing indoors, even breathing — and once double glazing and insulation seal a house up, that moisture has nowhere to go. It condenses on the coldest surfaces and mould follows.
The three things that actually fix it
- Ventilation: a good extractor fan in the bathroom and kitchen, or a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit that gently keeps fresh air moving through the whole house.
- Heating and insulation balance: cold external walls and cold spots are where mould starts, so reducing those cold surfaces helps.
- Treating the affected surfaces properly, then protecting them with an anti-condensation or anti-mould coating so it can't re-establish.
The health side
Black mould isn't just unsightly — it can affect breathing, particularly for children, older people and anyone with asthma. If you're a tenant, your landlord has a responsibility to deal with it, and we're happy to survey rental properties and provide a written report on the cause.
