They're often confused. Rising damp shows as tide marks and blown plaster low down on walls; condensation shows as black mould around windows, in corners and cold spots. We use damp meters on site to be sure before recommending any treatment — a lot of 'rising damp' turns out to be condensation, which is cheaper to fix.
